Sha Lo Tung is one of Hong Kong’s unique valley freshwater wetlands, covering about 57 hectares at an altitude of about 100 metres above sea level. Since the establishment of settlements over 300 years ago, it has always contained lush greenery with thriving agriculture and rich ecology. In the 1990s, many rare dragonfly species were discovered here, including species that were recorded globally for the first time, earning the place its name “Dragonfly Paradise”.
However, over time, the conflict between development and conservation in the area intensified, leading to a deterioration in local ecological conditions. Subsequently, the government implemented the “non-in-situ land exchange” policy to acquire ownership of private land in Sha Lo Tung, which marked a new chapter for conservation in the area, restoration work was also officially launched.
The “Sha Lo Tung Guided Tour” offers both day and night tours, bringing the public to tour every corner of Sha Lo Tung. Tour participants will get to discover its diverse ecology, take in the old village landscapes, survey the restored works and gain a deeper understanding into this precious wetland of Hong Kong.
