Green Power was founded in 1988 by a group of dedicated Hong Kong volunteers who care about the local environment. Since then, we have remained committed to promoting environmental education as we believe that education is key to changing the way we think and behave.
Green Power has been honored with The 2nd China Environmental Prize presented by the China Environmental Protection Foundation. This award is the highest social recognition in the field of ecological environmental protection in China, which recognizes our relentless effort in environmental education.
Our three key focuses are: ecological conservation, school and community outreach, and policy advocacy.
We actively engage in local ecological conservation efforts. Two examples of key projects are Sha Lo Tung Management Agreement Project (2018) and Long Valley Nature Park Habitat Management (2022). Both Sha Lo Tung and Long Valley are precious freshwater wetlands in Hong Kong. In Sha Lo Tung, we worked against wetland degradation by rebuilding irrigation systems and farmlands, restoring the area’s rich wetland ecology. The upcoming Long Valley Nature Park is an important milestone of the local government’s wetland conservation efforts; Green Power is responsible for managing the Biodiversity Zone of the park, where we create a diverse wetland environment through agricultural activity.
Over the years, we have been conducting various ecological surveys to collect important biodiversity data for Hong Kong. The data provides supporting evidence for our conservation and policy advocacy work. Applying the concept of being “citizen scientists”, we encourage community participation in conservation efforts and continued involvement in ecological surveys.
Schools and Community Outreach
We established Hong Kong's first Green School Network to assist schools in promoting environmental education. With a “Train the Trainer” approach, we organise workshops, seminars and field visits. We also produce interdisciplinary environmental education resources for teachers. Our focus for students is on getting them to engage, discover and learn something new about nature. We hope to establish in students that live in urban areas an emotional attachment to nature, encouraging heartfelt concern for nature and active participation in environmental protection in the future.
Every year, we organise large-scale community events around different themes to raise public awareness and understanding of various environmental issues. More importantly, these events provide opportunities for the public to participate directly in environmental protection activities, such as coastal and countryside clean up, removal of invasive species, recycling cash reward programmes, low carbon campaign challenges, and more. We hope to encourage the public to take action on environmental issues.
We actively respond to environmental policies and consultations by providing arange of solutions on environmental issues to the government and related stakeholders. We continuously advocate eco-friendly policies and measures that promote sustainable development in Hong Kong.
